Start counting volunteer hours now for your entry
Cities and towns: Start this month recording your community's volunteer hours for an opportunity to be recognized as a 2005 Volunteer Community of the Year. Given to 12 communities that display tremendous volunteerism, the Volunteer Community of the Year is sponsored by the Arkansas Municipal League, the Governor's Office and the Arkansas Department of Human Services Division of Volunteerism. Applicants submit a statement not to exceed three typewritten pages describing: · The number, scope and importance of the volunteer activities in their community; · The approximate number of volunteers working in these activities and the total hours worked; · The challenges faced by the volunteers; · Descriptions of the volunteer activities. Five pages of supplementary materials-such as newspaper clippings and photographs-may accompany the statement. A cross-section of community officials from around the state selects the winning communities. The deadline for applications is Oct. 1, 2005. See the December City & Town for information on last year's winners. For more information, contact the Arkansas Division of Human Services of Volunteerism at P.O. Box 1437, Slot S-230, Little Rock, AR 72203 or call 501-682-7540. The Department of Volunteerism's Web site is www.state.ar.us/dhs/adov/
